Washers & dryers are susceptible to moving damage
Washers and dryers are highly susceptible to damage during a move. A failure to properly prep and secure the drums on these appliances can result in costly repairs. It is generally recommended that you employ the services of a qualified service technician before you attempt to move your washer and dryer.
Step One: Disconnect the Unit
It is very important that you shut off the supply of all utility services to your washer and dryer units before you attempt to move them. You’ll want to shut off the gas supply valve directly behind your gas dryer and switch off the breakers to any electric washers and dryers. We recommend hiring a professional to handle major utility service. Mistakenly shutting off gas to other appliances can result in dangerous gas leaks.
Lastly, before you remove the unit(s), you’ll want to shut off and disconnect the water supplies and remove the drain hose from its stand pipe. These connections should all be located directly behind the washer and dryer.
When you pull your dryer away from the wall, be careful to monitor the tension of hidden vent, electrical or gas supply lines. Depending on the unit, you may have solid or flexible vent pipe which will likely be secured by screws or a clamp. You’ll want to loosen any permanent fasteners that may prevent the unit from moving.
Step Two: Clean & Air Dry
You’ll want to give your washer dryer units a thorough cleaning before finally wrapping it in furniture pads. Wipe off the appliance housing with a damp cloth and mild soap to remove soap residue and lint dust.
Lastly, you’ll want to prevent mold by allowing your washer to dry out. Leave the door open for at least 24 hours after you’ve disconnected the water supply to ensure that your unit is free of moisture during transit.
Step Three: Secure the Drum
Many washers and dryers come with moving pins or bolts that keep the drum stationary while the unit is being moved. If you do not have your kit, ask a service technician to recommend the best way to secure the drum on your model.

Appliances require special consideration as you prepare for your move. Many large units have high-voltage connections or gas supplies that require the attention of an appliance technician. Your United agent is not allowed to help you disconnect, service or reinstall appliances that fall into this category.
You may authorize your United agent to pre-arrange for appliance servicing before your move date. This service will be provided through a trusted, third-party service which will be added to the Bill of Lading as an additional cost.
Your United Mover Cannot:
Disconnect appliances (ice maker, washer, dryer, etc.) or reconnect them in the new residence.
Disconnect utilities.
Repair appliances.
Remove or install window air conditioners or television and radio antennas.
Perform wiring, plumbing, electrical or carpentry services
Ask your United agent about third-party appliance servicing. There are more than 20 different washer moving kits available from various appliance manufacturers. The cost for third-party servicing is nominal, especially for the protection it provides to your washer.
